The Artist

Posted : 2 years, 9 months ago on 29 February 2012 02:33 (A review of The Artist)

George Valentin (Jean Dujardin) is a star of silent movies in Hollywood of the '20s but the arrival of talking cinema and the Great Depression changed the situation in the life of George, who sees his career to fade quickly, since the film industry falls rapidly in the era of "sound" and looks for new stars that will invest. One of them is the young and beautiful Peppy Miller (Berenice Bejo) which from extras in the movies became a superstar.Their accidental contact takes place before starting all the dramatic changes that mentioned above, plays their own crucial role in the story...

With this movie Hazanavicius tries to prove that cinema is not sound effects and 3d movies but emotions.Emotion and love about art, about cinema about life.
And finally got it.With no words, with no sound, with no colours but with excellent screenshots, love and romance.
"The Artist" is silent love letter to the early days of cinema uses the sound with imaginative ways and has the exact look and feeling of a movie filmed in the 1920 and holds the best elements from the movies of that era.
The performances are great from all the cast.John Goodman,Beth Grant Penelope Ann Miller,James Cromwell are just great in the small parts of the mvie that appears.Berenice Bejo, totally beautiful gives an excellent performance with facial expressions. And finally Jean Dujardin is amazing.Simply amazing.Use facial and body language to show emotion, but the execution is totally subdued avoid melodramatically face. And the cute dog maybe the pest performance by an animal in cinema, was so funny.

Nostalgic and graceful, represents perfectly the golden age of Hollywood. And with no words says so much.So you must definitelly see this movie.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes

Posted : 2 years, 11 months ago on 20 January 2012 01:13 (A review of Rise of the Planet of the Apes)

San Francisco.Today.The man experimenting on animals resylting to a new kind of sophisticated monkey.Soon a world war breaks out for domination on the planet.
This movie was a big surpise for me.Even the script is not something special, the direction proved highly effectively.Less allegorical than what his predecessors were, but honest and persative for a blockbuster movie,Rubert Wyatt invests in other things to gain the confidence of the viewer without attempting to make the difference. He creates moments of big emotional tension, and his comment about the brute human nature is apt.The way that presents to us the adventures of the Monkey-protagonist Caesar is very sensitive and caring.
But the movie has and a serous problem. The first one hour film flows perfectly in the development of characters and generally feels like a serious movie, but the remaining half hour movie essentially committed suicide after starts the classic Hollywood stuff.Destruction, explosions and generally an uncontrolled situation with unnecessary action.

The performances are good by James Franco and John Lithgow.Again Freida Pinto is very beautiful but very bad actress.
But the great performance became from a monkey.A monkey called Andy Serkis.
The talented and definitely underrated actor plays the monkey Caesar and with the expressions and movements impress for another time.

With few words,an excellent blockbuster movie with deep messages and emotional scenes. Not only for action movie lovers.

Contagion review

Posted : 2 years, 11 months ago on 11 January 2012 01:12 (A review of Contagion)

A woman gets nuts from a bowl at the bar of the airport, and giving her credit card to the waiter.A business meeting begins with a handshake exchange.A man coughing in a crowded bus. With a contact a deadly virus has already spread.
Very famous actors are playing in this film directed by Steven Soderbergh but the final result is dissapointing. The documentary style and the superficial presentation of the characters has the result that finally we don't care about them.It keeps the cold narration of a genocide, which ultimately does not cause any emotion and finally we never feel the aspect of fear that is trying to pass to us the director.
The stories of the characters are uninteresting especialy the story of Marion Cottilard which is just uselless. On the other hand the movie has some good things and moments and these are the performances which are good especially by Kate Winslet,Jude Law and Jennifer Ehle and the soundtrack is simply amazing.

There Will Be Blood review

Posted : 3 years, 1 month ago on 16 November 2011 06:50 (A review of There Will Be Blood)

In the beggining of the last century,Daniel Plainview looking for silver in the American South. He discovered oil and soon became fabulously rich, and continued to seek new sources of greed in California.
This is with few words the plot of the movie of Paul Thomas Anderson, one the most interesting directors of our days.

And in this movie Anderson reduces the criticism in order to shed light on the results of the influence of power in values of a man.Anyway through the script and the narration of the story is easy to do comparisons to contemporary life and the the conflicting ideologies of the main characters of the film with contemporary political controversies surrounding the oil and religion.
The script is amazing and the music of Jonny Greenwood too.The music gives a basement, dark and pessimistic atmosphere stripped of every healthy human emotion.
And now few words about Daniel Day Lewis. That he is a very good actor we already know. But in this movie is simply brilliant and amazing. There are no words to describe this performance (one of the best performance in the history of cinema).Creates from the start a character which is ahead of his time based on speech and behavior of the period.Definitelly his best performance.Paul Dano plays the two key men in the life of Plainview, the informant and the pastor, and he is going very well in this difficult double? role.

Brilliant, very smart and effective multi-level script, with a pile variations and meanings.Affect the American dream, capitalism, religion, and the ambition of every man for success, and all the elements that surround our human existence like jealousy, betrayal and revenge.

Immortals review

Posted : 3 years, 1 month ago on 14 November 2011 07:57 (A review of Immortals)

Once again,Hollywood grapples with Greek mythology and again the result is not very good. The story:the bloodthirsty King Hyperion marching to ancient Greece to find the legendary "Bow of Epirus" which is made
by the god Aris, which will help to liberate the Titans who held prisoners by the gods of Olympus in a cage inside Tartarus. The only hope of gods and men is Theseus. In a raid on his village by the armies of Hyperion sees his mother murdered and swears to take revenge. With a few men and the teller Phaedra who has seen in visions that Theseus is the savior of Greece and of all humanity from the Titans starts a desperate attempt to stop King Hyperion and his armies.
First of all the movie has very good special effects and some shots are simply amazing. Also has and two very good fight scenes. That's it.These are the good things of the movie.
And all the rest are the bad things.Let's start!
Unfortunately the major flaw of the film is on how to tell the story.Without a narrative pace and without adequate development of the characters leaves the viewer away from the happenings of the plot (if this script called plot) and never connects with the heroes and their purpose, just watch without caring much about the their fate.
The performances are descent with better of all Mickey Rourke in the vrole of Huperion.
Henry Cavill in the role of Theseus is not bad but not something special.Freida Pintois just amazing beautiful.
The Titans:What can i say about the Titans?I prefer not to say very much.Just certainly not what i expect.
And something last:I don't know what they drinking there to Hollywood but something going wrong when next to Theseus fight a guy named Stavros and Zeus says that he has spent an odyssey.
With few words very good effects but that is not enough for a movie!

Dogtooth review

Posted : 3 years, 1 month ago on 13 November 2011 02:18 (A review of Dogtooth)

Isolated house in the countryside, with a tall fence, which living father, mother and three children aged around 17-22 years old. The father is the only one who leaves the house for work and supplies. The three children did not know anything about the world outside the house.except the education from the parents: the planes are flying small games,,the zombies yellow flowers, the cat an evil beast and exit from the house can be when you drop your dogtooth, which can hardly happen. The father relieve sexual needs of his son bringing a servant, but she introduces innovative demons.

The meaning of the movie very simple but concurrently very deep:how the authority organizing an education, builds a language to the world just to serve its needs,as each time understands these needs. The characters, correctly, have no names because wants to show with this way that the society has no name.Everyone on this movie is one of us.The father the leader of the family-the God of an entire world,of a sustem of the movie-considers the family as a closed circuit which must serve just him.The kids are belong to their father-God- and obey withoyt refuse to him.
On the other hand the smart of the movie is the situation of happiness who set's by father.Everything is part of the big plan says the movie.Everything!
The only negative element of the movie,is the abrupt end.

The Dogtooth is an amazing cinematic experience. With very powerfull scenes and very deep meaning. But is very good because talking about us.

The Tourist review

Posted : 3 years, 1 month ago on 10 November 2011 02:34 (A review of The Tourist)

Elise Clifton-Ward (Angelina Jolie),following the precise instructions of her partner,Alexander Pierce,a notorious crook who hides, leaves Paris for Venice. Both the authorities and gangsters are on their doorstep,so the Pierce's request is to find someone who resembles to him to con their persecutors. So,the light-hearted tourist Frank Tupelo (Johnny Depp),a mathematician who travels to overcome a love frustration,he will fall unsuspectingly into the net of the fascinating and mysterious Elise.
Well let's see some informations for this movie:first of all The Tourist is remake of a french movie Anthony Zimmer.Director is Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck who directs the great Live Of Others. In the script collaborates with Christopher McQuarrie (The Usual Suspects) and Julian Fellows (Gosford Park). The movie shotting in Paris and Venice. And the actors are two of the biggest names today:Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie. So must be good this film.
Well no.This movie is a big dissapointment.A very boring movie. It hasn't life or emotion. The characters are so empty like the direction of Donnermarck.
There is nowhere surpice in this movie and the twist in the end you figure out for the start of the movie.
The performances are bad.Really bad.Passion and mystery between the two characters appear only in the first level. Both Depp and Jolie embody two empty heroes, which absent the depth of the soul.Especially Johnny Depp gives the worst performance of his career.
Honestly one of the most boring movies i've ever seen.

The American review

Posted : 3 years, 1 month ago on 9 November 2011 07:47 (A review of The American)

When a mission goes wrong in Sweden,Jack (George Clooney),a professional executioner, will resort to central Italy. There should be organized, without attracting the attention of people who living there, the next job that intends to be his last. But now from hunter has become hunted. As always, alone among strangers who can be trusted,Jack searches for redemption for the acts of a lifetime. Two strangers, however, one priest (Paolo Bonacelli) and a beautiful prostitute,Clara (Violante Placido),are perhaps the only reminder that there may be a way out of his old life.

With George Clooney taciturn and perfect for the role of "American"and pics to bet to the beautiful Italian landscape and to sensual female presences, the movie of Anton Corbin has all the elements that can make managed to initially managed to impress in the beggining.
Adopted slowly rythms and gives, through a subtle threat, underground activity to the film. Uses increasingly panoramic shots and dark colors but the most impressive of all, however, is the place who choose for filming.Italy, transformed in the hands of Corbjin into the ultimate tool to set up the film. The stone buildings, the weather and the feeling of isolation give you the ultimate feeling of constant persecution.
But after the first half, the weak script drop the final result.Yes the script has problems and the final scene i think that is emotionally indifferent.
The performance of George Clooney is very good but as the minutes roll, seems like lose the hypocritical game in some scenes.

With few words a very good film, but needs patience to enjoy it.

Drive review

Posted : 3 years, 2 months ago on 15 October 2011 01:38 (A review of Drive)

A young man with a passion and natural tendency to cars, boring life, the dark night job,a pretty neighbor,a rival,a 'last trick and a dirty job that goes very, very wrong.
That's the story of Drive.Simply and nothing special. We see it a thousand times in cinema. But we doesn't see it with this way. From the first hypnotic synth notes, the shamelessly 80s opening gredits and an initial scene that introduces us without many words, but with speeds that are breathtaking, the unnamed protagonist-Driver,we understand that this is a film primarily aesthetic . Artfully filmed and with fetishistic devotion to details, the film of Refn is a film that proves that love from a director to the film and his dedication to aesthetic may be flooded images with emotion, even when the story is not something special.

Another great part of the movie is the supporting characters. The sweet neighbor Irene (Carey Mulligan) with the shy gaze tells everything they don't dare to confuse the two platonic lovers. The ingenious Shannon (Bryan Cranston),boss and mentor of Driver, hiding his dissapointment for the past and the admiration for the Driver in ambiguous smiles. The gangster Nino (Ron Perlman) a scary man but ultimately inadequate for the dirty work. The husband,Standard, who just rellease from the prison and is scared about the last job.And the unscrupulus Bernie (Albert Brooks) who must clean with his 'dirty hands' the bloody carnage.

But the real protagonist is one.And like Clint Eastwood in Sergio Leone movies has no name.Is the Driver a guy with unknown past, and a present who is restricted to silence.A lonely character but you feel only with his gaze that he knows much. That he has live very much things, and he has choose to live anonumus, drives the other's lifes. With no name, drives cars as a stunt in movies, drives in races for someone else,is a part of robberies in nights. And for him what left?Only the toothpick and the scorpio jacket and the car who drives very fast.As can you imagine for my words Ryan Gosling is amazing. He plays with silence and gaze and he don't play the bad guy,is the bad guy.Reminds a lot classic characters of the cinema, gives maybe his best performance.

Maybe the best movie of the year?Propably. But definitelly a movie proving that to make a film you need love and passion.

Scarface review

Posted : 3 years, 3 months ago on 10 September 2011 12:14 (A review of Scarface)

Scarface is a stunning and hard, for it's time, movie.Tony Camonte is a gangster who not understand anything beyond violence. The only aim for him is to reach at the top, which is nothing more than than the financial success and only that.
Howard Hawks captures well the thirst for power by Tony, and creating a harsh, pessimistic, bold and pitch-black film, influenced by the era,the economic crash.
The performances are very good. Paul Muni,an excellent actor, gives one of the best performances in history of cinema.Lives the role of Tony Camonte. And the other actors are very good especially Ann Dvorak in the role of Tony's sister.
Scarface is an excellent film noir film with amazing scenes and very good performances.Do you need anything more to watch a movie?
